Alongside the British museum, I also visited the National Portrait Gallery. This was a difficult exhibition to find paintings of the mother and child. However, I still managed to find a few. This is an A2 research page of my gallery visit and shows a guidebook/map. One of the first paintings I came across was of a Neapolitan mother and child. The artist who completed this work is unknown however, it looks almost as if it may have a Japanese influence considering its fine technique and rather monotone colour palette. this can be seen in the image above. The mother is cradling the child, again portraying the tender relationship between the two. The second painting I came across was a rather formal depiction of a mother and her child, perhaps royalty given the items of clothing they are wearing. This painting was completed by the artist , Anthony van Dyck. The painting can be seen in the image below:
This gallery visit again gave me an insight into the various depictions of mother and child. I was able to see images that did not have a Christian origin such as the one above, however they still portrayed the mother as the primary care giver.
